A 19th century scumble finish pine and iron bound hinge top tool chest. The scumble paint method was a technique that involves applying a thin, translucent layer of paint over a base coat to create a textured, visually rich surface. Historically used in the 18th and 19th centuries, it allows for the subtle blending of colors and softening of edges, enhancing the overall aesthetic and useful in the decorative arts for making cheaper woods appear more expensive by mimicking the look of high-quality materials. Various marks, knocks and scrapes commensurate with age and use. The old lining paper has been left inside. I’ve also left a little note from the previous owner of the box!
