Description
This full length silhouette of a woman, standing in her heavy dress clutching in her hand a book which I believe to be the bible, is finely executed with wonderful detail given to the lace in her bonnet and the collar around her shoulders and the sparing use of bronzing in the painting of the book, her rings and what looks like a mourning brooch. On the reverse of the silhouette there carries the verso:- Theodosia Heath born 1791 Sister to Mrs Wm Adams of Fenton Hall Died 5 January 1865 A Silhouette done about 1830 The Adams Family mentioned in the title of this listing was the North Staffordshire Adams Family of famous Potters of which there were three cousins carrying the same name William Adams, they have become identified as I, II, III, indeed there was a fourth William Adams who was the son of William Adams III. William Adams I is probably the best known producing fine quality pieces of stoneware, Jasper and Basalt. The William Adams that is relevant to this Silhouette is William Adams III (1772-1829) and is identified by the location of Fenton Hall, he manufactured Blue and White earthenware and with his son opened up a successful business in America. Sadly I could find no other information out about this good lady. I am pretty certain she does not sit in her original frame, possibly from the Celtic like pattern it would date to the beginning of the 1900s. I believe it is made of wood and it is very, very heavy. AGE - Circa 1830 Frame - Circa 1905 CONDITION - The silhouette is I think in very good condition, with no foxing that I can see, although the paper does appear to have darkened with age, it does carry some dirt marks to it which I hope you can see from the photos. The frame has a loss to one side which I hope you can see from the photos. A new hanger has been applied. DIMENSIONS (Approx) - Framed - Height 16&1/2" / 41cm, Width 12&1/2" / 32cm, Depth 2" / 5cm, Image Size - Height 10&1/2" / 26.5cm, With 6&3/4" / 17cm * POSTAGE - All items include the cost of packing and postage to the UK.
