Description
An unusual Georgian period needlework by Susannah Cleveland of Margate. The work is stitched in silks on linen and shows a fanciful bird perched in a rose bush. The quality of the work is very good and the colours bright but there are some minor loses to some flowers and discolouration around the edge. The work retains a label on the reverse that talks about the maker: Embroidery worked by Susannah Cleveland. Susannah Cleveland was the daughter of Mr. Sayer. Bathing rooms proprietor. High Street. Margate. She married John Cleveland and on her parents’ death, with her husband, carried on the bathing rooms. She had two sons, John born 1814 and George Augustine Stewart Cleveland born 1815. Great Grandmother of Kerbey and George Cleveland. The whole is a good example of Georgian needlework with an interesting history and decorative appeal, in the original frame. C.1810.
