Description

William Essex(British, 1822-1852) was a miniature painter for the aristocracy. This is dated 1840, labelled with full provenance to the back and the preparatory work to the oil miniature sold at Bonhams with the WRONG Essex as they attribute it to the father also William Essex
Lady Charlotte Greville (née Bentinck) (1775-1862), wearing dark red dress, the neckline trimmed with white lace, her curling brown hair upswept beneath a white turban (in the oil). Here she is on paper as a watercolour sketch handed down within the sitters family. There is an unfinished portrait of Lady Charlotte painted circa 1820-5 that hangs at Goodwood House
Lady Charlotte, daughter of William Henry Cavendish-Bentinck, 3rd Duke of Portland and Lady Dorothy Cavendish, married Captain Charles Greville, son of Fulke Greville and Frances Macartney, on 31 March 1793.
She was also an artist
