Description
Type of artwork: Original Antique Watercolour Artist and Signature: Rowland Henry Hill (Staithes Group, 1873–1952) Biography – Rowland Henry Hill (1873–1952) Rowland Henry Hill was a British painter associated with the Staithes Group, a celebrated colony of Northern Impressionists working along the North Yorkshire coast in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The group was known for its free, spontaneous brushwork, plein-air methods, and honest depictions of rural and coastal life. Hill painted extensively around Whitby, Robin Hood’s Bay, Runswick Bay, Hutton-le-Hole, and the inland villages of the North York Moors. His work combines impressionistic colour with a loose, expressive handling of watercolour, often capturing movement, atmosphere and natural light with great immediacy. By the 1940s—when this painting was completed—Hill had refined a more fluid, gestural style. His later works are increasingly sought after for their freshness and sense of place. Pieces depicting specific Yorkshire villages, especially recognisable scenes with architectural markers such as the village cross at Hutton-le-Hole, are particularly desirable to collectors of regional art. Today, Hill’s watercolours appear regularly in northern auctions and are held in private collections across the UK. His Staithes Group connection ensures a steady, loyal market, especially for works with strong composition and identifiable locations. Subject: A lively 1945 watercolour by Rowland Henry Hill of the Staithes Group circle, depicting the village green at Hutton-le-Hole. The distinctive village cross is visible to the right, confirming the location. Hill captures the trees, cottages and open green with his characteristic loose, confident brushwork. A charming North Yorkshire scene with good local interest. Approximate age of artwork: Dated 1945 Is the artwork Framed or Mounted: Presented in a glazed frame with mount, as shown.
