Description

This little French frame is made of Brass with a wonderful thick bevelled pane of glass and is of the easel design, all of which maybe true but there is so much more to this little frame. First of all there is the wonderful shaped swags and swirls and the sinuous lines of the embossed decoration at the top and bottom of the frame which is very much in keeping with the Art Nouveau Style of the period Often one sees examples of these photo frames where there is detail to the top of the frame but plain at the bottom apart from two ball feet. And when I took the glass and CDV card out the of the frame to photograph it I realised that this frame is slightly different from the ones I have seen before as there is a little hinge at the top that allows you to flip the top detail over to hold in the glass. On the back of the frame there is impressed BREVETE.S.G.D.G, which I believe is a patent mark used in France until 1968 acknowledging it is without Government Guarantee. And then we have the wonderful CDV card this frame displays and I do honestly wonder whether this frame was bought to house this card as on the back of the card is the photographers name of Berthauld with the address of 9 Rue Cadet Paris and at the bottom is the number of the card and the date 1892 which is very much in keeping with the age of the frame. And how I love the photo which portrays two I imagine siblings, I think two boys, both dressed in their tunics with leather belts loosely buckled around their waists and very smart identical boots, the younger child has his blond hair cut short with the older one whose dark locks have even allowed to grow long. It really is such an endearing image.

AGE - Circa 1890
*
CONDITION - Both the frame and the CDV card are in good condition. The gold colour of the brass has faded slightly with age as as you can hopefully see in the eigth photo there is a spring like mechanism which I imagine hold the glass tightly in the frame, I think this may have lost its spring a bit but it still holds securely. The glass appears to be free of any chips on the edges although I confess to only taking it out the once for photographing not wanting to keep opening and closing the hinge at the top, which still feels secure but I am aware it is old. also I imagine the CDV card has yellowed slightly with age and looks a little more so when in the frame.
