Description
Type of artwork: Original Watercolour Painting Surface: Paper Artist and signature: Attributed Verso to D T Rose David Thomas Rose (1871–1964) Scottish Civil Engineer and Watercolourist David Thomas Rose was a Scottish-born civil engineer and accomplished watercolourist, celebrated for his depictions of British landscapes, urban scenes, and everyday life. Born on May 9, 1871, in Glenluce, Wigtownshire, he was raised in Nairn, where his early interest in drawing was not encouraged by his family. Despite this, he pursued a career in civil engineering, apprenticing in Inverness and later working on significant projects such as the West Highland Railway and the Scar House Reservoir in Nidderdale, Yorkshire. Rose’s engineering career took him across the UK and abroad, including work in Malta and Italy. Throughout his travels, he maintained a passion for sketching and painting, often capturing the people and places he encountered. In the 1920s, he began experimenting with etching, producing works that reflected his keen observational skills and interest in everyday scenes. Upon retiring in 1935, Rose settled in Brighton, where he dedicated himself fully to painting. He joined the Brighton and Hove Art Club and embarked on sketching trips to locations such as Rye, Bruges, and Normandy. His works from this period are noted for their detailed representation of markets, towns, and rural life. In 1937, at the age of 68, he held his first solo exhibition in Brighton. Rose continued to paint until his death in 1964 at the age of 93.
