Description
Outstanding ebony hard wood and hallmarked silver walking stick or cane. Beautiful obsidian crystal ball top that sits into a silver collar decorated with engine turned engraving and a cartouche to the front engraved with the initials AN. Typical of canes used by undertakers / funeral directors when they wore full black and walked in front of the coffin. Also of course used as evening canes by gentlemen in the 1920's and 30's. The silver was fully hallmarked, you can see what's left of the marks but they're too worn to identify. The makers mark is clear for WH Carrington & Co, silver mounters in the late 19th and early 20th century in Thomas Street Manchester. It measures 94.5 cm 37 1/4 inches in length, the pommel is 5 cm 1 15/16 inches wide. The silver collar is 2 5/8 inches 6.7 cm long. It's a really heavy cane coming in at 485 grams. The ferrule is made of brass and steel. It's in excellent condition but with some minor surface signs of age and use as you'd expect at this age. The shaft is strong and has no breaks or repairs. The silver has some scratches but no holes or splits. Ref page 61 Walking Sticks and Canes by Anthony Moss. Please contact us with any questions you may have.
