Description

This exquisite antique figurine depicts a courting couple; a young woman seated on an outdoor bench adorned with grapes and flowers, while a young man stands behind her, attempting to embrace her as she shyly evades his touch.
Crafted in the Volkstedt factory at the end of the 19th century, this magnificent pair is made of unglazed Parian porcelain, which mimics the appearance of marble. Parian porcelain was developed around 1845 by the Staffordshire pottery manufacturer Minton and is named after the Greek island of Paros, known for its fine-grained white marble.
The snow-white finish of the figures enhances their elegance, with the matte, rough texture of the biscuit porcelain highlighting the intricate details, particularly in the woman's face and dress. This level of craftsmanship exemplifies the high quality for which Volkstedt porcelain is renowned.
This figurine, which stands on an integrated circular plinth base, is a valuable piece of museum quality that would make an extraordinary addition to any home. It bears the mark of Triebner Ens & Eckert, the founders of the Volkstedt porcelain manufactory, and is impressed with the number 11. This piece showcases the fine painting and meticulous modeling that have earned Volkstedt a lasting reputation among collectors.
