Description
Antique Wedgwood small lustreware bowl by Daisy Makeig-Jones – butterfly design, c. 1914 This elegant antique small bowl, designed by Daisy Makeig-Jones for Wedgwood, features a smooth pearly exterior adorned with fine gilt decorations along the top edge. The interior radiates a vibrant orange-gold lustre, highlighted by intricate gilded patterns along the rim. At the centre of the bowl lies a beautifully gilded butterfly, adding a delicate and striking touch to the design. The base bears the Wedgwood Portland Vase mark. Historical background: Susannah Margaretta "Daisy" Makeig-Jones (1881–1945) joined Wedgwood in 1909 and became a full designer with her own studio in 1914. She is celebrated for pioneering the iconic Fairyland and Ordinary Lustre series, transforming lustreware into highly sought-after decorative art. This bowl, corresponding to pattern Z4832, is part of the Ordinary Lustre range introduced in 1914. The butterfly design was produced until 1929 and remains highly collectible today. Limited production, combined with growing recognition of Makeig-Jones' artistry, has made her works a valuable investment for collectors.
