Description
This small watercolour painting on card would date to the beginning of the nineteenth century. With the subject of a small boy with tumbling curls standing with his right hand over his heart in a pose which I confess makes me think he is pretending to be Nelson. He is dressed in a splendid green jacket over a frilly collared shirt and his other hand is nonchalantly stuffed into what looks like a trouser pocket. Indeed I do think this little portrait could be termed as Folk Art as I imagine it was painted by a talented Amateur and when you look at his face there is something just off with the perspective in where the eyes have been placed, but for me that just increases the portrait's charm. The portrait sits in a simple wooden frame which is of a lovely depth and a beautiful rich brown colour with a gold coloured slip and what looks like its original hanger, if not the portrait's original frame it certainly has a good deal of age to it. AGE - Circa 1805 CONDITION - Both the portrait and the frame are in good condition. There is no foxing to the portrait that I can see, although I do think the colours have faded slightly over the years although something tells me they were never very strong. Also the painting has moved very slightly in the frame leaving a few small gap in the top left corner as you look at it, best seen in the first photo. The gold paint of the slip is worn and at some time in the recent past the back has been opened and secured with tape as well as a wire hanger being applied, as ever I would check the strength of this wire before using for hanging. * DIMENSIONS (Approx) - Framed - Height 7&1/4" / 18.5cm, Width 6&1/2" / 16.5cm, Depth 3/4" / 2cm.
