Description
Description A 19th-century Victorian glass tumbler produced in England around c1850. The glass is engraved with symbols of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, in particular, the Eye of Providence, Beehive, Coffin and Cross Quills; the crossed quills are typically used to represent the office of the Secretary. Two figures stand on either side of the main cartouche, one holding a bow, and the other holding a flag above the ‘Paschal Lamb’. The stag is found on some other odd fellows' memorabilia; however, it's less common and may instead be a heraldic symbol denoting a family clan or a leadership position. Loral wreath engraved on the other side of the glass. Large polished pontil to the base and a nice tactile weight to the glass when held. Date & Origin England, c1850. Period of Queen Victoria. Condition Excellent. No chips, cracks or restoration. Dimensions Height: 10cm Rim diameter: 8.7cm Base diameter: 7.7cm Historical Context The Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF) originated in 18th-century England as a friendly society for working-class individuals in "odd" or un-guilded trades, designed to provide mutual aid, financial security, and social support. Officially established in the U.S. in 1819 by Thomas Wildey in Baltimore, the fraternal organisation gained popularity for its focus on benevolence—specifically visiting the sick, relieving the distressed, educating orphans, and burying the dead.
