Description:
An original early 18th century French etching by Anne-Claude-Philippe de Caylus (1692–1765) after a composition by Claude Gillot (1673–1722).
Entitled “Repas Distingué”, the scene depicts an elegant outdoor gathering centred around a dining table, surrounded by numerous figures within a wooded landscape.
The work is printed on old laid paper, with the engraved title REPAS DISTINGUÉ beneath the image.
The impression is closely trimmed around the plate mark, but retains the complete principal composition and engraved title.
Approximate plate dimensions: 21 cm × 18 cm.
Artist biography:
Anne-Claude-Philippe de Caylus was an important French antiquarian, collector, writer and printmaker of the 18th century. A member of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture, Caylus produced numerous etchings after earlier and contemporary artists and played an influential role in the study and preservation of European art.
Claude Gillot was a highly significant French painter, draughtsman and designer whose theatrical and satirical compositions helped establish the emerging Rococo style. He was also an important teacher and influence upon Antoine Watteau.
Condition report: The artwork is considered to be in good antique condition in line with its considerable age. There is age-related toning, handling and general surface wear to the paper, and the impression has been closely trimmed.
