Description
A fine pair of 18th-century engraved ale glasses dating to c1770.
They have conical bowls engraved with a pair of crossed barley ears in saltire, framed by finely detailed hop vines with scrolling tendrils, the traditional symbols of English brewing.
The bowls are supported by short plain stems with distinctive shoulder knops, standing on neatly formed conical feet.
A well-matched pair displaying classic Georgian proportions and attractive period engraving associated with beer and ale drinking.
Date & Origin
England, c1770. Period of King George III.
Condition
Excellent. No chips, cracks or restoration. The engraving is crisp and confidently executed.

Historical Context
During the 18th century, ale and beer remained the everyday drinks of much of Britain, consumed by all levels of society as they were often safer to drink than untreated water. Glasses decorated with engraved hops and barley were made specifically for serving these beverages, the motifs reflecting the two principal ingredients used in brewing.
