Description
A delightful and beautifully preserved mirror-image pair of vintage Staffordshire flatback earthenware figurines, depicting the iconic No.12 "Champion Jockey" model by the renowned Sampson Smith pottery works of Longton (est. 1846). Produced in the mid-20th century utilising the factory's historic, authentic 19th-century Victorian moulds, this left- and right-facing set represents a scarce survival as an intact pair. Each figure features a jockey hand-decorated in vibrant, crisp yellow and green racing silks, complete with fine facial details, a red cummerbund, and deep blue riding trousers, mounted atop a stylised white racehorse. True to their traditional Victorian heritage, these flatback profiles were designed to sit perfectly flush against a wall or mantlepiece. The subtle variances in the hand-painted gray accents on the hooves and tails beautifully highlight the individual artisan craftsmanship of each piece. Condition: Both figures are in excellent vintage condition with an exceptionally bright underglaze firing. There are absolutely no chips, cracks, or post-factory restorations to either piece. In keeping with the rustic, hand-crafted nature of vintage earthenware slip-casting, there are minor, entirely authentic under-glaze manufacturing firing marks to the reverse of one figure, which do not detract from its display appeal.
