Description

Original antique etching by Valentin Lefebre (1637–1677) after Titian, from the celebrated series Opera Selectiora, first published in Venice in 1682.
The scene depicts shepherds driving a flock of sheep through a rocky landscape towards water, with a flute-playing shepherd and dog at the left, boats on the lake, and a distant city and mountains beyond.
The plate is inscribed within the image:
“V. Lefebre del. et sculp.”
“Titian in.”
“J. Van Campen Formis Venet s.”
These inscriptions correspond with the example held by the British Museum, which records the work as an etching by Valentin Lefebre after Titian, published by Jacobus van Campen in Venice in 1682.
Artist: Valentin Lefebre / Le Febre
After: Titian
Series: Opera Selectiora
Date: First published 1682
Medium: Original etching on laid paper
Subject: Shepherds and flock in an extensive Italianate landscape
Period: Late 17th / early edition
Condition: Good antique condition overall with age-related toning, scattered spotting and some historic edge wear and mounting traces. Please study all photographs carefully as these form part of the condition description.
This appears to be an early Van Campen state, before the later Teodoro Viero publishing address. The precise printing date of this individual impression has not been established, so it is described conservatively as an early impression from a plate first published in 1682.
A very decorative and historically interesting Old Master print with excellent detail and strong period character.
Approximate Size of artwork 61 x 47 cm (mount aperture size 45 x 32 cm)
