Description

Description
A fine pair of Georgian engraved barley wine glasses dating to c1800.
They have tall conical bowls finely engraved with fruiting vine on one side and a single ear of barley on the reverse. Large blade knops at the shoulders above angular knop stems and conical feet with snapped pontils.
Historical Context
In the absence of engraved hops, these are not standard ale glasses but rather a pair of barley wine glasses. Georgian ale glasses were conventionally engraved with both hops and barley, whereas glasses engraved with barley but without hops are recognised as barley wine glasses. This distinction is also recorded in surviving period examples and specialist glass literature/cataloguing.
Barley wine is a particularly strong style of beer, traditionally reaching a strength comparable with wine, hence the name. Despite this, it is technically a beer, being brewed from malted grain rather than fermented fruit.
The combination here is particularly unusual, with fruiting vine on one side and a single ear of barley on the other, bringing together the traditional imagery of wine and barley wine.
A rare form, and the first matching pair we have encountered in over 25 years.
