Description

This is a rare Georgian, English, plain stem engraved ale glass dating from the middle of the 18th century, c1750.
The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot commensurate with some 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has an extended rounded funnel-shaped bowl measuring 5.8 cm (2.3 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is nicely engraved with a single passion flower spray (passiflora) and with a Hoho bird to verso, the engraving being of a rare form. The bowl sits on a plain stem that ends in a conical, folded foot which measures 7 cm (2.8 inches) in diameter. The glass is 17 cm (6.8 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There is a small unburst bubble in the metal of the foot dating from manufacture. There are collectors' stickers for the Peter Eales Collection and Manser Collection plus one other to the underside of the foot.

English lead glass weighing in at 140 g. (~ 5 oz.).
