Description
An exceptional piece of American commercial hospitality history, this heavy-gauge "hotel plate" water pitcher or hot milk pot was produced by the world-famous Gorham Manufacturing Company in 1927. Designed as an individual serving vessel for elite restaurant or room service dining, the pot features a classic spherical, bulbous body beneath a wide flared neck encircled by a refined, repeating chevron-style engraved band. The front of the main body proudly features an exquisite, highly detailed hand-engraved interlocking script monogram (reading "A.H." or "A.H.C."), identifying this piece as a custom-ordered commission for a luxury 1920s hospitality establishment, estate, or private club. It comes complete with a heavily insulated hollow-walled scroll handle and a smoothly functional hinged flap cover, operated by a ribbed thumbpiece. The underside of the base is meticulously marked with the official Gorham factory stamps: the signature Anchor crest, "GORHAM MFG. CO.", and "SILVER SOLDERED"—identifying its rugged, institutional-grade craftsmanship where joints were fused with silver alloy rather than soft lead. It bears the unique pattern production number 0320, the batch stamp J, and a distinct Heart date symbol, precisely verifying its 1927 year of manufacture. Condition Report This robust pitcher is in excellent antique condition with no structural damage, splits, or repairs. The hinge operates well. It currently sports a deeply matured, dramatic dark silver sulphide patina (heavy tarnish) throughout the exterior surface, proving its untouched estate origin and showcasing the crisp details of the custom monogram. Because Gorham hotel ware was produced with incredibly thick silver layers, this piece could easily be hand-polished back to a brilliant mirror-shine if desired, though it is sold as found to preserve its historic character.
