Founded by the great grandson of the actress Marie Tempest, one of the greatest sopranos and comic actresses of her day, Marie Tempest visited China in the 1910s as part of an eight year international tour in 1914, which she took in Singapore, China, Japan and the Philippines. During her lifetime she gathered a large collection of European and oriental art, which in turn influenced the direction of the Gallery.
